For some reason, holidays get so stressful. Maybe we are all thinking of who we “should” be and forgetting to enjoy who we really are. Or maybe issues that have been bubbling all year come to a head at the holidays during all the “togetherness…”
I’ll spare you the details but, suffice it to say – just in time for Thanksgiving – my extended family had “an episode” reminding me that I’ve got to have good boundaries in place. I called a girlfriend to vent. Our conversation reminded me that I’m not alone. She has an inlaw who seems to feel it’s his mission to make family gatherings awkward. She’s dreading the Thanksgiving antics too.
So, what do we do? Brace ourselves for the things we can’t control, focus on all the blessings we can enjoy and make sure that we put up mental and sometimes physical boundaries around the situations we need to stay out of.
One important consideration though, make sure you don’t block yourself off from the turkey!
