I find it so interesting to watch retailers in this economic climate. The same common sense principals apply whether it’s a brick and mortar shop or an online store like Clever Betsy. It comes down to the Golden Rule – “Do unto others as you’d have them do unto you.”

The article I’ve linked to below made some excellent points about what Circuit City did wrong and should have done differently. And this guy made his predictions back in March. He’s right on target. The point I agree with the most is that Circuit City shouldn’t have laid off those of their staff who were properly educated and paid accordingly. They made a tactical error when they sacrificed their staff’s technical knowledge to lower costs.

Now, how does this tie in with the Golden Rule? Well, whenever I go into a store, especially to buy something technical, I want to be able to ask questions and get a CORRECT response instead of a blank stare or, worse yet, a lie. I don’t know how many times I’ve purchased cables, flash drives etc at a variety of retailers with the assurance of a store employee that it will work and gotten home only to find that it isn’t the correct item. This inevitably occurs when I’m on some type of deadline and really needed said cable or flash drive to work properly – right away!

So, one of many ways that retailers can apply the “Golden Rule” is to provide employees who can deliver accurate and complete information. Otherwise, I (and others like me) won’t be providing them with my accurate and complete credit card information! The “Golden Rule” really shows businesses the way to make the gold for the long run – treat people properly.
