I have a dear friend who is struggling for her sobriety. I empathize. I’ve been there. I don’t judge her at all. I’m grateful to her for all the times she’s propped me up, given me advice and helped me meet my own goals. So, I’m glad to listen any time she calls and do my best to give her the right feedback. I’m also working the ALANON program to try to keep myself on track.
The other night she called and told me she’d relapsed and visited a bar. A very negative incident occurred there that hurt her feelings and compromised her safety. My heart hurt when she told me about it. Even if she made a poor choice, she didn’t deserve to have anyone use that against her. But that’s darkness for you. Evil does exist and we must guard ourselves against it as best we can.
One way to do that is to position ourselves in “places of light and enlightenment” instead of in places that are physically, emotionally and spiritually “dark.”
Bars tend to be dark. Strip clubs are dark. Drug transactions are often under the cover of darkness. Those who are fighting depression tend to want to draw the shades and “hide” under the covers.
Conversely, schools are usually well lit. Churches are generally bright. Offices are light. Being outside in nature during the day gives us fresh air and wonderful sunlight that is proven to improve our mood and physical well being…
It sounds so common sense but it’s easy to forget – position yourself in places of light and you’ll be more prone to productivity, happiness and a positive vibe. You’ll also increase your odds of exposure to other individuals who have the same goals.
