There is a parenting series at my church called “Have a New Kid by Friday” by Dr. Kevin Leman. Even though I like both my kids and don’t want to swap them, I’m always trying to improve my parenting technique so I thought I’d sign up. I’m glad I did. It’s full of good reminders about tips I’ve already heard as well as some new ideas I’m going to try.
The format is two-fold. We watch a pre-recorded video segment on theory and then have a discussion about application with our peers. One metaphor that was on the video segment today caught my attention. Dr. Leman was talking about looking for the good in our children instead of the bad. He used the example that both vultures and hummingbirds look for food in the dessert. Vultures look for dead meat while hummingbirds look for sweet nectar in the flowers of cacti. Both birds find what they seek. So it is with our children. We find what we look for.
