My 4 year-old can be so insightful sometimes. Today we were having one of those delightful conversations you can have only with kids – “What kind of animal would you be?” We covered the entire globe of animals and both swore to be all sorts of mammals, amphibians and reptiles. But one part of the conversation captured my attention. I’d told my son I wanted to be a cheetah because they are so fast. “But mommy,” he lectured me, “cheetahs can’t go that fast for very long you know.” It’s true. They are sprinters as I tend to be. And I’m finding in my life that while sprinters can cover a lot of ground quickly they can’t sustain their fastest pace for very long.

My son continued on to say “Mommy, everyone knows the slow animals always win.” I assume he was referring to the fable of the tortoise and the hare. He was so sure in his declaration that slow and steady wins the race. He made me think about it. If I could only move ahead more slowly and consistently…
