My husband’s grandmother knows I’m “crafty” (in the artsy sense!) and so she has been giving me all sorts of cool things she’s gathered over the years and now wants out of her garage. I love these “treasure boxes” that my 4 year old and I also refer to as “jackpots.” We fight over the contents. He’s as much of a magpie as I am and I have to watch my beads and buttons closely or they’ll disappear into his collections!

Anyway, one of the boxes she gave me recently contained the most beautiful collection of tatted lace doilies. I’ve always loved these delicate, spidery concoctions.

My great grandmother used to crochet profusely and every holiday she’d spread doilies all over her bed and have each of us choose a few as her gifts to us. I so enjoyed all the colors she used and the variety of shapes she could conjure with her magical crochet hook. Her bed was like a kaleidoscope with bright, ever changing patterns.

These beautiful doilies reminded me of her even though most of them were plain white. I felt like honoring her and decorating my front room at the same time. So, I starched the doilies heavily and sprinkled white and light blue glitter over them while they were still wet. Then, I laid them flat to dry. When they had stiffened, I hung them all over the front section of my house where the tree is. They look beautiful and I think cleaning up all the glitter that keeps falling off them is worth the sparkly memories they provide.
